ΨΙΛΟΚΟΥΛΟΥΡΑ ΚΑΙ ΛΟΥΚΟΥΜΑΔΕΣ – GREEK SESAME COOKIES AND HONEY DONUTS
Traditional goodies, such as Greek sesame cookies, and honey dipped donuts, that are mostly made by women on special occasions. Λουκουμάδες και ψιλοκούλουρα είναι παραδοσιακά καλούδια που φτιάχνουν συνήθως οι γυναίκες πάνω σε μέρες γιορτών.
ΧΡΥΣΗ Κολαΐνα / GOLD NECKLACE MADE OF COINS
Traditionally worn on her wedding day, a Karpathian bride will wear a gold necklace made of coins. This is usually passed down from older generations. Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, η Καρπαθιά νύφη, θα φορέσει την κολαΐνα που της έχει ληφθεί σαν δώρο απο προηγούμενες γενιές. Την σημερινή ημέρα πολλές γυναίκες αγοράζουν νοσμίματα για να δημιουργήσουν την κολαΐνα.
40 ΜΕΡΕΣ ΕΥΧΗ – 40 DAYS BLESSING
40 days after the birth of a baby, the mother and child are joined in church to receive blessing from the priest. Όταν κλείσουν 40 μέρες από την γέννα του μωρού, μαζί με την μητέρα, λαμβάνουν και οι δυό, ειδική ευχή από τον Παπά της Εκκλησίας.
ΣΥΛΛΟΓΗ ΚΑΛΑΟΥΡΩΝ ΜΕΤΑ ΤΑ ΠΡΩΤΟΒΡΟΧΙΑ / OUTDOOR GATHERING TO COLLECT SNAILS AFTER THE FIRST RAINFALL
Outdoor gathering during rainfall season with fellow women to roam the fields and gather snails for cooking purposes. Μετά τα πρωτοβρόχια ενώνονται οι Καρπαθιές για να μαζέψουν σαλιγκάρια, ή ”καλαούρους” (όπως τους λέμε στην Κάρπαθο) για μαγείρεμα.
ΠΑΡΑΔΟΣΙΑΚΗ ΣΤΟΛΗ ΕΝΔΥΜΑΣΙΑΣ ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΟΛΥΜΠΟ / TRADITIONAL COSTUME FOR WOMEN THAT COMES FROM OLYMPO
Women and their daughters wear traditional costume dresses that originate from the village Olympos in Karpathos. For formal events, women wear these costumes to perform traditional dancing as well. Οι Καρπαθιές φοράνε παραδοσιακές στολές απο την Όλυμπο, Καρπάθου. Επίσης, Καρπαθιές γυναίκες φοράνε τις στολές και χορεύουν παραδοσιακούς χορούς σε εκδηλώσεις.

HOUSECHORES / ΔΟΥΛΙΕΣ ΤΟΥ ΣΠΙΤΙΟΥ
- Most Karpathian women on the island use a clothesline outside of their home to dry their clothing, especially during the summer time.
- Depending on the home, some women also need to get water from the village’s water mainstream, and use it to wash their clothing.
- Electricity commonly goes out on the island which is why many modern women today also turn to these practices.
KARPATHIAN WOMEN SERVE THE FOOD ON BIG CELEBRATIONS / ΚΑΡΠΑΘΙΕΣ ΣΕΡΒΙΡΟΥΝ ΦΑΓΗΤΟ ΓΙΑ ΤΙΣ ΓΙΟΡΤΕΣ
- Women traditionally serve men and children at occasions.
- The food varies depending on the occasion. Sometimes seafood if it is a religious holiday, or the traditional Karpathian meal which consists of meat, rice and lemon potatoes.
- The women used to be dressed as seen in the photo. However, Karpathian women today, only wear the traditional costume for dancing purposes or celebrations and not day-to-day.
