Γεια σας, και Καλό Μήνα ! Happy February!
The Start of a Holy Season
Today’s blog post is inspired by a tradition that truly captures the heartbeat of Karpathos: the legendary Apokries of Othos.
Clean Monday (Καθαρά Δευτέρα) signifies the beginning of the 40-day Lent (Σαρακοστή) and the spiritual preparations for Easter Sunday. Throughout Greece, this day is marked by children flying kites and families enjoying the outdoors. However, in the mountain village of Othos, this day takes on a vibrant life of its own through a tradition of celebration and unity that has inspired the entire island.
The Masks and Music of Othos
While the fasting period is often a time of quiet reflection, Othos embraces the day with high-energy music, dance, and song. The residents dress in unique, elaborate costumes and wear masks to disguise their identities, adding an air of mystique to the festivities.
What makes this tradition truly special is how it brings the whole island together. A week prior to the day, the people of Othos board buses with their local musicians, traveling to every village in Karpathos to share their upbeat spirit. This is their way of inviting all Karpathians to the upcoming celebration in Othos, which takes place the following week, on Clean Monday. It is an extremely fun day that showcases the excitement and joy of the approaching Easter season. Many residents of the island join the Othites in dance and song, creating a celebration like no other!
A Lenten Feast
On Clean Monday the hospitality of Othos shines. The women of the village serve a variety of delicious, meatless and dairy free appetizers to welcome the fasting period. The infamous ”Πιπέρι / Piperi” takes place towards the evening. The men in the celebration are taken away (all in good fun) to be judged by a non-official court, and they charge them money. The funds are used for the following weekend, as another celebration takes place.
This celebration is a testament to the pride of Othos and the enduring spirit of Karpathian culture. Whether behind a mask or holding a kite string, it is a day of unity that marks the beautiful beginning of our journey toward Easter. ❤
